FORT MYERS, Fla. (Nov 12, 2021) — Heatherwood Construction Company breaks ground on Phase 1 of an affordable housing project in Immokalee — located at the northwest corner of Lake Trafford Road and 19th Street. The project will include 128 two- and three-bedroom apartments in eight two-story buildings, a community and cultural center with a computer lab, library, and classrooms for early-childhood and after-school learning as well as athletic facilities.
Once a vision that seemed unreachable is now a reality thanks to donors and the community. The project was made possible by the efforts of the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance, which is on a mission to eliminate substandard and overcrowded rental housing for farmworker families and other low-income residents of Immokalee.
“Safe, affordable, decent housing, hurricane-resistant housing is the missing link to help low-income Immokalee families escape from exploitation and poverty,” said Arol Buntzman, chairman of the Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance. “When housing costs are more than 50 to 60 percent of household income, there’s a problem.”
Added David Ellis, director of business development at Heatherwood Construction: “Affordable housing is a fundamental part of our community, and we were so grateful for the opportunity to break ground on this apartment complex,” “As someone who has been a part of developing affordable housing communities for the last 30 years, it’s great to have partners that equally share in the care of its community.”
Heatherwood Construction is also a partner in another Immokalee project nearing completion on the van Otterloo campus, located at 3655 Westclox Street.
“Heatherwood Construction prides itself on leading with honor and compassion for our clients and community,” said Walter Crawford, president of Heatherwood Construction. “I’m grateful for a team who understands the importance of giving back.”
