The Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance gave an update today on the first of eight new apartment buildings for low-income families in the area.

“We’re giving priority to families with children that live in Immokalee and are living in the worst conditions paying the highest rents,” said Dr. Arol Buntzman, chairman and CEO of Immokalee Fair Housing Alliance.

Located on Lake Trafford Road, the complex includes 128 two- and three-bedroom apartments with a Category 5 hurricane rating. A community center will offer space for meetings, after-school programs, health care assistance and more.

With support from grants and private support, rental rates are capped at 30% of a family’s income. Long-term maintenance for both apartments and community infrastructure will be fully covered.

Danny Gonzalez, a long-time Immokalee resident, president of Immokalee Chamber of Commerce and owner of Lozano’s Mexican Restaurant, said it’s a great addition to his hometown.

“The project they’re doing… it’s really helpful,” Gonzalez said. “That’s the start of a good thing here in Immokalee.”

The first buildings are set to be completed in June with 16 families set to move in. Applications for lease can be picked up at B-Hive Flowers & Gifts at 720 N 15th Street.
